Think about going to the grocery store. What are your staple items? Do you buy the same ingredients with the same recipes in mind for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Most people view grocery shopping as a routine task, but in the same routine, most people end up purchasing the same food items to make the same recipes, over and over again. In fact, 60% of us eat the same dishes week after week.
A survey commissioned by Ocado revealed that most people own an average of six recipe books, however, they are also stuck in a nine-meal rotation. Another survey stated individuals only have seven meals in their rotation list. Of the 2,000 adults they asked, most of which continue to keep the same dishes in on their menu, rarely break the barrier, and hardly ever introduce new meals from one of their cookbooks. One in four adults admittedly cook the same meal on the same day, i.e. Taco Tuesday, and many individuals admitted to lying to friends to make their meal planning sound more exciting.
Think about your childhood favorites. Do you cook the same dishes you enjoyed as a kid for your children? Did your mom or dad cook the same family recipes their mom and dad made for them? Like it or not, we are creatures of habit. We crave structure and find routines to be safe and effortless.
